The steep hillsides of Mission Hills lent themselves to the modern three-story design of a 4,055 square foot single-family home, the Jackdaw Residence.
This house is one of three adjacent revival residences. To preserve the site's city and bay views, Nakhshab created a three-story cascade that weighs in at just over 4,200 square feet. Using natural step construction, the house's floors are built into and against the hillside, providing a buttress that reduces the size of the retaining wall, while increasing allowable interior square footage. The home has an 18 foot retractable wall that disappears into side pockets, opening onto expansive decks views and water features. It also features a hydraulic elevator for easy access to the three floors.
One of the most unique aspects of this project is what you will find next door: a mid 1960’s post-war modernist residence by famed local architect Homer Delawie. Rooftop views are perfect for watching planes land over the Bay. One of the earliest developments for our company, Jackdaw still remains one of our favorite projects.
